Young People help to Create Willow Sculpture

As a part of a fun day at Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve, organised by East Cheshire Council, young people helped to create a willow sculpture of Michael Jackson. This was chosen as the theme as October was the month to celebrate black achievement.

Iron Age Roundhouse

On Saturday 13th September 2008 a model Iron Age Roundhouse was made at Beeston Castle. This was a part of the “Habitats and Hillforts of Cheshire’s Sandstone Ridge” project, in collaboration with Cheshire County Council and English Heritage.

The roundhouse was 1 metre across at the base and visitors were invited to help in the construction. Because of the nature of the site, we made a table top version, although we would have been delighted to go for full size! Willow hurdling made up the side walls and locally sourced heather was used for part of the thatch. As an experiment with materials some of the thatch was done in straw. Both would have been available locally and there is no evidence to say which would have been used by the Iron Age builders. We decided not to include daub just yet!

Middlewich Vision: Canal and Salt Town Project, Exhibition: 18th and 19th October 2008 at the Big Lock, Middlewich

We demonstrated and encouraged visitors to have a go at willow weaving salt drying baskets. These were used in days gone by to put the brine in. Once it had dried out it was taken out of the baskets.
